What Alaska law requires

Alaska's ignition interlock, SR-22, and reinstatement rules are set by the statute and agency rules cited below. The values in the tables on this page are taken from those sources and are not interpretations of how they apply to any particular case.

Ignition interlock requirement

Under AS 28.35.030(b)(1)(A), on a first conviction the court shall require the person to use an ignition interlock device for a minimum of six months after the person regains the privilege (including any limited privilege) to drive. Under AS 28.35.030(b)(2)(C) the court may not suspend the IID requirement for an alcohol-related DUI. The DMV notes IIDs are ordered by court judgment and also required for a limited license during revocation.

SR-22 requirement

An SR-22 is a certificate an insurer files with the state to confirm that a driver carries the liability coverage the state requires. Some states use an FR-44 or a different form for alcohol-related offenses; where Alaska does, the sources below say so.

SR-22 (proof of financial responsibility for the future). Under AS 28.20.230(c), a person convicted of DUI under AS 28.35.030 or refusal under AS 28.35.032 must maintain proof for 5 years (no prior conviction), 10 years (one prior), 20 years (two priors), or for as long as licensed (three or more priors). The DMV requires proof of SR-22 insurance dated within the last 30 days at reinstatement.

Is an ignition interlock device mandatory after a first DUI conviction in Alaska?

Yes. Under AS 28.35.030(b)(1)(A), on a first conviction the court must require the person to use an ignition interlock device for a minimum of six months after regaining the privilege to drive, including any limited privilege. What is the Alaska license reinstatement fee after a DUI revocation?

Under AS 28.15.271(b)(3)(C), the reinstatement fee is $200 if the license was revoked under AS 28.35.030 or 28.35.032 only once within the preceding 10 years, and $500 under (b)(3)(D) if revoked two or more times. The DMV also charges the regular license fee, and a $50 J fee applies to an alcohol-prohibited restriction.

The Alaska Department of Corrections handles Breath Alcohol Ignition Interlock Device (AIID) certification and posts certification letters and installer lists. As of August 2026 its page lists 1A Smart Start, ALCOLOCK, Alcohol Detection Systems, Intoxalock, LifeSafer, and RoadGuard-Draeger Inc. The DMV's IID page links to that DOC list.
